The curious explorer
Nine nights in Kyoto is actually the right amount, because the city only starts to make sense once the first few days of temple-hopping wear off and you settle into a slower rhythm. The eastern Higashiyama ward is worth multiple visits at different times of day, but go early morning before the tour groups arrive on Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, when the stone lanes are quiet and shopkeepers are still setting up. Most people make the mistake of treating Fushimi Inari as a quick photo stop at the base gates, then heading back into the city, when the real payoff is hiking all the way to the upper shrines where the crowds thin out and the whole thing feels genuinely eerie and atmospheric. Nishiki Market is better as a late-morning wander than a lunch destination, since the vendors are more generous with samples and the narrow lanes are less of a bottleneck before noon. One practical thing worth knowing: IC cards like Suica or ICOCA make getting around on buses and the subway much less stressful than buying individual tickets, and they can be loaded on an iPhone if setting one up beforehand. Arashiyama is worth the trip out, but go on a weekday and skip the bamboo grove entirely if it has been raining, since the path turns into a slow-moving crowd with wet umbrellas and none of the calm that made it worth visiting in the first place.
