Muscat rewards the traveler who slows down enough to actually use it as a base rather than just ticking off the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and calling it done. The Hajar Mountains are a forty-minute drive from the city and most people never go, which is a mistake, because Wadi Bani Khalid and the villages around Jebel Akhdar are where Oman actually shows itself. Go early on mountain days, before ten, because the afternoon heat is serious and the light is better anyway. Most visitors spend too much time in Mutrah Souk and not enough time walking the Mutrah Corniche at dusk toward the fish market end, where it gets quieter and more local. A practical note worth knowing: dress conservatively outside the hotel, taxis are easy to find but agree on price before getting in, and Friday mornings most things are closed so plan that as a hiking day. Six nights is actually the right amount of time here if the pace is steady, because it lets one day trip out toward Nizwa without feeling rushed.
