Miami: Sun, Art & Bass

Art Deco hotels on Ocean Drive, Cuban coffee and pastelitos in Little Havana, Wynwood's murals, and a nightlife so unapologetically loud and late that you wonder if the city ever technically sleeps.

About This Trip

Miami rewards the people who treat it like a city and not just a beach vacation. The real action in Wynwood and Little Haiti takes time to unlock, and showing up Monday through Wednesday means galleries, restaurants, and bars are actually staffed by people who want to talk to you rather than survive a weekend rush. Most visitors make the mistake of sleeping in after a late night and losing the best hours of the morning, when South Beach is genuinely quiet and the Art Deco buildings on Ocean Drive actually look like what they are instead of a backdrop for drunk tourists. For nightlife, skip the tourist-facing clubs on Collins and find your way to warehouse parties in Allapattah or the late-night spots around NW 2nd Avenue where the crowd is local and the cover charge is honest. Versailles in Little Havana is worth the line for Cuban food, but go for lunch and stay long enough to have a cortadito at the walk-up window and watch the dominoes crowd. One practical thing: rent a car or budget heavily for rideshares because Miami's geography will punish anyone who assumes they can walk between the parts that matter.
