The comfortable traveler
Cairo rewards people who show up curious and willing to move at the city's pace, not their own. The Pyramids at Giza are best reached by 7am before the tour buses arrive and the heat builds, and if the adventurer type is in the mix, hiring a local guide through the Egyptian Tourism Authority office on-site beats any pre-booked group tour for flexibility and access. Most visitors burn their first two days on the Giza plateau and Islamic Cairo, then run out of time for Coptic Cairo and the City of the Dead, which is a genuine loss since the Qarafa necropolis is one of the more unusual places to photograph in the entire country. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir is getting overshadowed by talk of the Grand Egyptian Museum out in Giza, but both are worth separate half-days and the original still has rooms that feel barely curated, which is either charming or frustrating depending on the traveler. Khan el-Khalili is genuinely worth visiting but go after sunset when the light is better for photography and the hard-sell energy from vendors cools down slightly. Six nights is enough time to do this properly if there's no dead afternoon sitting in the hotel, so building in one evening on a felucca on the Nile near Zamalek keeps the pace from feeling relentless without wasting a day.
