About This Trip

Eight nights splits well as five in London and three in Edinburgh, and the steady wanderer pace is exactly right for both cities. London rewards people who resist the urge to tick off landmarks and instead spend full afternoons in single neighborhoods: Bermondsey on a Saturday morning when the antique market is still quiet, or a long walk from Dalston through De Beauvoir Town into Islington to see how the city layers itself. The mistake most visitors make in Edinburgh is staying near the Royal Mile, which looks dramatic and delivers almost nothing real about how the city actually lives: spend time in Stockbridge and Leith instead, where the streets are slower and the pubs are not performing for tourists. The train between the two cities runs along the east coast and the stretch through Berwickshire is worth a window seat, so book it rather than flying. Edinburgh in particular changes completely with the weather, and a grey afternoon on Calton Hill is a different experience than a clear one, so build in enough loose time to revisit things rather than locking every hour in advance. One practical note: the Oyster card does not work in Edinburgh, so do not arrive expecting the same tap-and-go transit setup as London.
