About This Trip

Seven nights in New York is enough to go deep if the itinerary stays tight by borough rather than bouncing around randomly. The food scene rewards the obsessive — skip the obvious spots in the West Village and instead eat at the stalls inside Essex Market on the Lower East Side, then follow that with a late-night bowl at one of the Flushing, Queens night market spots where the lamb skewers and hand-pulled noodles are the real draw. For photography, the pedestrian ramp on the Manhattan Bridge (accessed from the Brooklyn side near DUMBO) gives a framed shot of the Brooklyn Bridge that most people never find because they stop at the waterfront and call it done. The mistake most visitors make is treating Manhattan as the whole trip — a half-day in Astoria for the street murals and Greek coffee culture, and another in the South Bronx around Melrose for the graffiti walls along the Metro-North corridor, will completely reframe what New York actually looks like. Timing matters more than people expect: the subway runs 24 hours but gets genuinely unpleasant on weekend nights between midnight and 3am, so budget for a car app or plan routes in advance. Carry small cash for food stalls and street vendors, because a surprising number still don't take cards and the nearest ATM will charge fees that add up fast across a week.
