Eight nights in Iceland is the right call because it gives enough time to actually chase conditions rather than just hope for them. The Northern Lights require getting well outside Reykjavik, ideally toward the Reykjanes Peninsula or up past Hvalfjörður, and the single biggest mistake people make is waiting until their last night to try, then losing it to cloud cover. For photography, Kirkjufell looks completely different depending on whether you shoot from the roadside pullout everyone uses or walk around to the northern bank of the river, which takes maybe fifteen extra minutes and eliminates half the other photographers from your frame. The highlands roads, including anything marked F, will still be closed in early to mid June, so check road.is obsessively and build flexibility into any plans that go inland. Reykjavik itself is worth one solid evening around Grandi and the old harbor area, but spending more than a night or two there on an adventure-focused trip is a waste of the access that a rental car gives you. Thermal pools beyond the Blue Lagoon are worth seeking out, and Landbrotalaug near Reykholt fits two people, costs nothing, and sits in a lava field with no signage that makes it genuinely easy to miss if the directions are not written down before leaving cell range.
