The Tijuca Forest rewards early starts — arriving at Pedra da Gávea or the Pico da Tijuca trail by 7am means cooler air, fewer people, and the kind of light that makes every photo look effortless by 8am. Most visitors treat Santa Teresa as a half-day detour, but the neighborhood earns a full evening: the bars around Largo do Guimarães get genuinely lively after 9pm and draw a local crowd that has little interest in performing Rio for tourists. The common mistake is burning two or three days on Copacabana and Ipanema when Barra da Tijuca and the Grumari beach stretch to the west offer wilder coastline with a fraction of the crowds, though you will need to sort a car or a reliable rideshare to get there. Lapa on a Friday night is worth doing once for the sheer spectacle of the arches and the frevo spilling into the street, but keep your phone out of sight and stay aware of your surroundings, especially past midnight.
