About This Trip

Seven nights in New York is just enough time to stop rushing and actually eat well, which is the whole point. The food payoff is real but it requires leaving Midtown almost entirely — the best mornings happen in Flushing or Sunset Park, where dim sum and Sichuan breakfast spots open early and the crowds are locals, not tourists. Most visitors waste two or three days orbiting the High Line and Chelsea Market when the more interesting photography is happening in Greenpoint at golden hour, or along the elevated stretch of Broadway in Astoria where the light hits the train tracks in the late afternoon. The cultural history that actually sticks is in the neighborhoods themselves: spend time in the Lower East Side reading the building plaques and eating at Katz's on a weekday before 11am, before the line forms and the energy turns performative. A MetroCard is fine but the bus system is underused and often faster for moving east-west across Brooklyn or Queens, which is where a lot of the worthwhile wandering happens. Pack comfortable shoes that can handle wet pavement — the subway grates and uneven sidewalks will punish anything with a sole that isn't broken in.
