Medellín rewards people who stay long enough to get past the transformation narrative — after a few days in El Poblado, make the move toward Laureles or Envigado, where locals actually eat and drink without a tourist markup. The metro cable lines up to Santo Domingo and beyond are genuinely worth the effort, but go on a weekday morning before the crowds arrive and keep going past the tourist stop to where the neighborhoods get quieter and more real. Most visitors spend all their time in Parque Lleras and miss Barrio Colombia and the Parque de los Pies Descalzos area entirely, which is a shame because the contrast between the two sides of the city tells you more than any museum will. The nightlife in El Poblado is loud and fun but it skews heavily expat, so if that's not what you're after, head to Barrio Colombia or ask a local to point you toward a salsa spot in Bello or Itagüí. Timing matters more than people expect: the city sits in a valley and afternoons can be hot and loud, so plan outdoor and uphill activity for mornings and save neighborhoods like Aranjuez or the city center for cooler hours. Rideshare apps work well and are far safer than hailing taxis off the street, which is worth knowing before your first late night out.
